Welcome!

At Brookfield, our school resides in a rural area in the mountains of North Carolina. Most of our children come from farming families and start their mornings doing various farm chores. With a majority of our children coming from farming families, and with our community mainly being composed of farmers, you can imagine some of the issues we run into with funding for our AIG program. Our diverse set of students is encouraged in many areas such as collaboration, self-concept, and keeping amazing self-efficacy. Because of our area locale, students have access to a variety of hands-on learning experiences that foster resilience, and persistence, and the children have learned a great appreciation for the land they inhabit.

As their AIG teacher, I take great pride in fine-tuning the genius that our students have been able to learn just by being a part of this farming community. I take great pride in seeing how my diverse group of students have things to teach each other and seeing all the amazing things they each bring to the table.

In my blog, I list many resources that I feel would be beneficial for each of my students in the Brookfield area. I hope to see my young group of geniuses, who come from this small town, snuggled in between the North Carolina Smoky Mountains, go on to change the world!

Resources For Teachers

Dr. Novak was my Gifted Education professor in college! She has multiple blogs published on her page I found would be good resources for teachers!

This is a document downloaded to my personal Google Docs, I couldn't make it viewable in any other format so contact me if you are unable to view it. This publication helped me greatly to understand how to better serve my students!

I guess you could say she has made an impression on me! ;) This was published by my Gifted Education teacher at East Carolina University. This publication talks about how we can properly reach and engage Gifted students who live in poverty. This helped me greatly understand how financial burdens have had affect on my students.

For my lovely Students...

As your teacher, it is not only my job to teach you, but to affirm you! As you all know we do affirmations in the mornings to set us straight for the day to come! Here are some affirmations you can read if you are not at school and need some affirming.

I can do big things I never thought possible!

I am not defined by the situations I am in.

I am resilient and smart.

I will become the person I dream to be, starting today.

Parents & Community

Parenting Gifted students can be challenging... What can you do to better understand or help your child?

Whether or not you are viewing these resources for your own child, extended family, or someone in your community. These resources will be good to use!

Parenting 2E Students

Don't know what twice-exceptional students are? 2E students are children who are categorized as Gifted but also portray an extra educational need. These children may have physical handicaps such as blind or deaf children, developmental or mental handicaps such as Aspergers, or learning handicaps such as ADHD. This is a great resource for anyone who needs help understanding how to raise or just how to interact with their 2E child.

Parenting Culturally or Racially Diverse Students

This resource is great for parents or communities of racially and culturally diverse students. With minorities being underrepresented in gifted education, it is important parents of gifted children should be ready to advocate for your student!

Parenting Gifted Children

While this is just an article about general gifted education, no gifted child will have the same issues, only similar ones. This is a great resource for parents who may just need a little extra tips & and tricks when it comes to parenting their gifted child. This may help parents better understand the challenges your child has and even their positive traits they carry as well. Hey, no shame for needing a little extra help. ;)
